Prin urmare, terapia cu particule este un tratament ideal pentru tumorile din apropierea organelor radiosensibile, cum ar fi creierul, m\u0103duva spin\u0103rii, ochii sau pl\u0103m\u00e2nii. Deoarece \u021besuturile \u00een cre\u0219tere rapid\u0103 reac\u021bioneaz\u0103 mai sensibil la radia\u021bii, <strong>terapia cu protoni este deosebit de potrivit\u0103 pentru cancerele la copii \u0219i adolescen\u021bi<\/strong>. Prin reducerea la minimum a dozei la nivelul \u021besutului s\u0103n\u0103tos, se poate reduce riscul de consecin\u021be pe termen lung, cum ar fi tulbur\u0103rile hormonale \u0219i de cre\u0219tere, sau tumorile maligne secundare. \u00cen ceea ce prive\u0219te eficien\u021ba tratamentului, terapia cu particule ofer\u0103 o eficacitate biologic\u0103 mai mare \u00een compara\u021bie cu radioterapia conven\u021bional\u0103. Aceste propriet\u0103\u021bi aduc mai multe avantaje biofizice atunci c\u00e2nd trec prin materie: <strong>o doz\u0103 de intrare mai mic\u0103 la proximitatea tumorii<\/strong>, <strong>o depunere de energie aproape complet\u0103 la locul tumorii<\/strong> (care corespunde unui a\u0219a-numit &#8222;v\u00e2rf Bragg&#8221;, a se vedea Fig. 1) \u0219i <strong>aproape nicio depunere de doz\u0103 de ie\u0219ire \u00een \u021besutul distal fa\u021b\u0103 de tumor\u0103<\/strong> (Fig. 2,3). Aceast\u0103 afectare efectiv\u0103, nereparabil\u0103 a ADN-ului este de aproximativ 20% dup\u0103 iradierea cu LET sc\u0103zut \u0219i de aproximativ 70% dup\u0103 iradierea cu LET mare. <strong>Eficacitatea biologic\u0103 relativ\u0103 RBE <\/strong>(din englez\u0103 \u201eRelative Biological Effectiveness\u201d) <strong>a particulelor este, prin urmare, mai mare dec\u00e2t cea a fotonilor<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Aceasta \u00eenseamn\u0103 c\u0103 <strong>protonii \u0219i ionii de carbon ucid mai multe celule tumorale dec\u00e2t fotonii la aceea\u0219i doz\u0103 de radia\u021bie<\/strong>. Acest lucru este valabil \u00een special pentru <strong>ionii de carbon, a c\u0103ror RBE este de 3-4 ori mai mare \u00een compara\u021bie cu fotonii<\/strong>. Acest lucru face ca terapia cu ioni de carbon s\u0103 fie deosebit de potrivit\u0103 pentru tumorile care sunt \u00een mod tradi\u021bional rezistente la radioterapia conven\u021bional\u0103, cum ar fi <strong>sarcoamele osoase \u0219i ale \u021besuturilor moi, tumorile cu cre\u0219tere lent\u0103, recidivele locale dup\u0103 radioterapia conven\u021bional\u0103<\/strong> sau <strong>tumorile hipoxice (cu con\u021binut sc\u0103zut de oxigen)<\/strong> care sunt deosebit de rezistente la radia\u021bii. Mai multe studii, at\u00e2t preclinice, c\u00e2t \u0219i clinice, au ar\u0103tat c\u0103 astfel de tumori rezistente la radioterapia conven\u021bional\u0103 pot fi adesea tratate cu succes cu ioni de carbon.
