Radiobiology explores and characterizes the biological effects of ionizing radiation, including the ion beams available at MedAustron, on different scopes. On the one hand, the different biological effectiveness will be investigated along the beam track for different radiation qualities and endpoint specificity. This includes tumor models as well as several biological models for reactions in normal tissue. Thereby, the validity of physical planning algorithms together with the biological impacts can be verified.
An essential research topic in radiobiology is the identification of predicative tumor markers. Such biomarkers will allow for the individualized prescription of the optimal therapy. Besides of the available radiation qualities, the specific biological properties of the affected tumor and normal tissue are important influencing factors.
