The MedAustron project has its roots in the 1990’s and is the response to a widely-held consensus of opinion that Austria should build an interdisciplinary centre of excellence that would serve the reunited Central Europe. The final project for a cancer therapy treatment centre with clinical and non-clinical research facilities has been planned in collaboration with all of the Austrian University Clinics and Departments for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology. The centre comprises an accelerator facility based on a synchrotron for the delivery of protons and carbon ions to irradiation stations for cancer treatment and for clinical and non-clinical research. All the appropriate biological and physical irradiation planning and diagnostic systems will be included. Once the centre is in full operation, it will be possible to treat 1,200 patients per year.
