EBG MedAustron Supervisory Board at CERN |
|
16.10.2009 (EBG) On the 14th of October 2009 the EBG MedAustron GmbH's supervisory board met for the first time at CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research near Geneva (CH). The particle accelerator which will constitute the core of the MedAustron facility is being developed jointly with this institution.
The CERN Director General, Prof. Rolf Heuer, and the Co-ordinator for External Relations, Prof. Felicitas Pauss, as well as the CERN Director for Accelerators and Technology, Dr. Steve Myers, all emphasised the importance of the MedAustron project for the global ion therapy and stressed their gratification at being able to make a significant contribution to this project together with the Federal State of Lower Austria.

One of the highlights of the day was a guided tour through the caverns of the CMS detector, one of four main experiments with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), to which Austria is also contributing significantly via the Institute for High Energy Physics at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Thus EBG MedAustron's chairman of the supervisory board was able to gain a first impression of the activities and dimensions of CERN. Guided by Dr. Michael Benedikt, the deputy leader of the Beam Operations Group and MedAustron project manager, the control centre and parts of the feeder accelerators were visited, which are very similar to MedAustron in their designs and dimensions. “This collaboration is of paramount importance to our project,” stressed EBG’s chief executive Dr. Martin Schima. The chairman of EBG’s supervisory board, Mag. Klaus Schneeberger, was particularly delighted to meet those 30 employees in Geneva, who are currently carrying out the preliminary work for MedAustron. „You are living proof of the benefits brought about by our cooperation with CERN. Your knowledge, your efforts and your experience make it possible to realise the 200-million-euro MedAustron project as planned. I am glad that the cooperation between Austria and MedAustron in particular and CERN has been so productive - now there are no more obstacles to successful development.” Picture description: Picture 1 Austrian guests in front of the CMS detector at CERN [Copyright CERN, to use free of charge] Picture 2 (f.l.t.r.)
