We take every chance to fight cancer

The MedAustron Centre for Ion Beam Therapy and Research is equipped with the latest technology and infrastructure to facilitate research projects in the fields of medical radiation physics, radiation biology, and experimental physics.

Dr Tom SinjeBesides the treatment of patients in clinical trials also non-clinical research is conducted. It will support the non-clinical medical research goals through a broad range of research programmes in medical radiation physics and radiation biology. The main themes will be the understanding of biological and physical mechanism of action of ions, the resulting improvement of therapeutic concepts as well as the development and improvement of diagnosis, planning, positioning, and therapy equipment.

In the field of experimental physics, the accelerator facility will provide a strong impetus to the development of accelerator physics research in Austria. For the first time, interested scientists and researchers will be able to build appropriate local research programmes and provide advanced training technologies for the next generation of scientists.

With the new and innovative Centre for Ion Beam Therapy and Research, the initiation of intensive research cooperation and knowledge transfer with Austrian universities and institutes, research companies and international research institutions is planned. In total over 200 million euros will be invested in research excellence.
